Opinion: how Marvel should continue the MCU

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/001202.jpg

Marvel has definitely done something that no movie company (Warner Bros., Fox, Sony, etc.) has ever dreamed of doing. They have created a shared cinematic universe, aptly named the MCU for short, in which all the heroes live within the same universe and eventually team up together.

This has worked well with their phase 1 set of films (which include Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: the First Avenger, and the first Avengers film), especially since the Avengers became the third highest grossing film of all time in 2012. Phase 2 will be including the likes of Iron Man 3, Thor: the Dark World, Captain America: the Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the second Avengers film, and each film is expected to do as well as the last.

Iron Man 3 is currently doing very well and is the second highest grossing film of the Marvel films currently, despite a few complainers about the third film's "plot twist" (which in my opinion was a shocking surprise in a good way, which in return works for a movie trying something different).

Now we are unsure to what will happen in the next planned movies in the MCU, but many fans and geeks (like us) have been continuously guessing and coming up with pretty good ideas to where the universe can go with it's phases. For those who don't know, Marvel currently has three phases planned which means there will be three Avengers movies. From what we can only speculate by what Kevin Feige, Joss Whedon, and the directors of the solo films tell us, how could, and probably should, the Marvel movies proceed to move?

WARNING: potential spoilers for those who haven't seen the other seven films currently out now, read with a bit of caution...

  1. GIVE THANOS THE INFINITY GAUNTLET
Thanos was seen in one of the two end credit sequences of the first Avengers film, and revealed to be the real baddy behind the Chitauri Invasion and Loki's new source of power and knowledge. He is definitely going to be a big influence in the MCU and will most likely be the main villain in Avengers 2. He is an alien Titan obsessed with controlling Death.

Anyone who knows Thanos knows very well that his most iconic and most powerful weapon is indeed the Infinity Gauntlet. The next solo films could potentially hint at Thanos'es minions searching for the gems needed to fully construct his gauntlet, but nothing is for certain at this point.

The Infinity Gauntlet mounts the six Infinity Gems to access complete mastery over one aspect of the multiverse: Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality, and Power. Thanos uses this Now all-powerful weapon to help win the affections of Death (as is in the Infinity Gauntlet six issue series from 1991). In short, not using the Infinity Gauntlet would be a waste of potential and would be an extremely strong aspect into leading Thanos to ultimate power. Heck, there's already a prop of it that even briefly appeared in Thor!

2. DON'T JUST BE SEQUEL HEAVY

Now don't get me wrong, sequels are always fun and it's good to see our favorite heroes battle their own problems once again. But there is a huge universe of possibilities and other heroes we haven't met yet, we need to leave room for them to make an appearance. Now granted some new heroes may appear within these sequel films, like War Machine in Iron Man 2 or Falcon in Captain America sequel, but they only appear in films that mainly focus on the title hero only.

In phase 1, we only had one sequel in the solo roster and the Avengers film finale. In phase 2, we have three sequels and only one new solo feature! There are more heroes out there that I'm sure the audience will love and a majority of them will add something new to the universe. Marvel will need to make sure that they keep adding more new films and less sequel films in the near future. Oh well, at least phase 3 will include new solo films like Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, and (freakin hopefully) Black Panther...

(NOTE: I do not count the Avengers films as "sequels" despite having all paste heroes return in another film. While they are technically "sequalic" to all the past solo films, it should be seen as its own thing, an Avengers trilogy)

3. ADD MORE FEMALE HEROES

So far the only real hero to appear that was the opposite sex was Black Widow (unless you count Peggy Carter or Sif). And Black widow was the only one to appear into the first Avengers film. Now we know Marvel is not sexist, they literally have a ton of super women in their comics and television cartoons (Jean Grey, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, Psylocke to name a few). Marvel just has to introduce them into their world(s).

Many can be used easily in the next couple films. Pepper Potts was kind of hinted at becoming "Rescue" in the third Iron Man film, while she wouldn't be an Avenger member or really expanded out of the Iron Man lore it can still be cool to see a hero working from another perspective. Scarlet Witch can easily be included into the roster alongside her twin brother, she would also be a power hero and the first female power hero to be included in Avengers.

The most obvious choice for another fem-hero has to be Wasp. Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) is the Girlfriend/Wife of Hank Pym (a.k.a Ant-Man/Giant Man/Yellow Jacket) and is one of the original founding members of the Avengers in the comics and television. just like her Boyfriend/Husband, she has the ability of size manipulation to shrink and grow insect-like wings (giving her the nickname "Pixie") she is also capable of shooting energy blasts from her hands when in small form. Seeing as how they're making an Ant-Man movie in 2015, which will most likely have Hank Pym appearing as the main protagonist, they should definitely include Janet Van Dyne as well! They can easily show off their romance, him giving her powers, a balance in both of their origins, etc. She would also add a new characteristic to the universe (in other alternations, she is seen as talkative and pretty annoying at times, she most definitely loves being a super hero!).

Yes there are many female characters in the MCU, but now we need more female "heroes" in the MCU...

(Edit: I did forget that the female hero "Gamora" is set to appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy film, she will be portrayed by Zoe Saldana)

(Edit 2: Another definite candidate is Mrs. Marvel! Please don't ask how I forgot her. They can easily introduce her in one of the phase 3 films!)

4. HAVE NO BOUNDARIES!
Guardians of the Galaxy is their next big risk to tackle (their first being Thor). The superhero roster consists of Star Lord: the half man, half spartoi hybrid and leader of the Guardians Gamora: an alien witch with supernatural abilities who was also adopted and raised by Thanos, Drax the Destroyer: a resurrected once-human hell bent on hunting Thanos, Groot: an alien tree monster born from royalty, and Rocket Raccoon: an intelligent anthropomorphic raccoon who is an expert marksman and master tactician. Those hero backgrounds alone should reveal how much of a risk Marvel is taking. The movie is slated for an August 2014 release.

Marvel is unique in the fact that they are not afraid to take risks with their films and ideas. These risks are what has made Marvel the superior movie makers in the comic industry. This risk taking is what eventually inspired DC to go and make a Green Arrow TV show, and apparently they have a possible Justice League movie planned.

Marvel is not shy of risks, so they should take more risks! Include the Inhumans! Unleash the wrath of Surtur! Include S.H.I.E.L.D.'s counterpart, S.W.O.R.D.! Keep giving us big and awesome surprises!

5. HAVE ULTRON GET MADE BY HANK PYM
Ultron is not only one of the most powerful villains in Marvel, but arguably the most powerful adversary the Avengers have ever faced. This baddie has caused more near death experiences than many other villains. There's even an animated film where Ultron actually kills off the iconic Avengers heroes and takes over most of the world, leading the children of the Avengers to stop him.

The Ant-Man film is the start of the phase 3 films and the script is currently being changed in order to fit within what is or is not going to happen in the next couple MCU films. While I mentioned Infinity Gauntlet being a waste of potential for Thanos, not using Ultron would be even MORE of a waste for a very popular villain.

It would be a neat change of direction for the the current films too. These current two phases have lead to alien invasions and eventually universal battles, is Ultron becomes the main villain for Avengers 3 it would be a more earth global crisis and it would be a battle against a man made creation instead of otherworldly visitors. It is also a shock villain for audiences who don't know about Ultron.

Ultron was made by Hank Pym (a.k.a Ant-Man + other heroic names), Hank's intentions were to make a powerful protector of peace and goodness, something that could stop war and violence in the world and makes things better through logic. However Ultron's logic becomes over logical and the machine becomes one of Hank Pym's biggest mistakes. This story arch could very easily be the synopsis for the Ant-Man film (even though that film will most likely just be an origin story for Pym).

Whatever the case, I just hope that Marvel leaves at least hints to a potential Ultron story arch. From an old poll I voted on, Ultron was easily the most demanded villain to appear in Avengers!

6.INCLUDE BLACK PANTHER AND VISION!

Black Panther is easily the most demanded hero to have in the MCU,and who can blame the fans? Black Panther (T'Challa) has a very unique and very original origin story, one that could easily fit into the universe and bring in a lot of possibilities. He is usually considered to be Marvel's Batman, which could be due to his great combat skills and detective work, as well as being all black with pointy ears on the costume. Marvel would literally be stupid if they did not make a Black Panther movie down the line, well phase 3, so Marvel please plead to the cries of your fans!

Vision is another great hero that I think really deserves to have some sort of part in the MCU. Vision in the comics was created by Ultron to be his most powerful minion against the Avengers, but Vision soon learns to know know the difference between right and wrong and eventually joins the avengers. He has almost ghost like capabilities that allow him to turn completely hollow and fly through walls, he also has great strength and a friggin laser on his forehead! There were rumors after the events of Avengers that Agent Coulson would become the vision and eventually join up with the Avengers in a future sequel. Given the fact that they still haven'yt confirmed his suspicious death in Avengers, and the fact that he is still alive and appearing in the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, I really do wonder if the television series has more to offer than we think...

7. MAKES MOVIES OF THESE GUYS DOWN THE LINE!

Yes, Marvel has bought the movie movie rights for Punisher, Dare Devil, and Ghost Rider back from the companies that originally owned them then. While Marvel currently has no plans to make any new films about them, they are always a possibility for phase 3 and beyond...
