Bethesda has confirmed this morning that Prey 2 is not cancelled, but has been delayed. Here's what they said:
Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule. It's good to see that a great looking game like this isn't getting thrown on the scrap heap. If all goes well, we'll see Prey 2 on store shelves in 2013.

The rumor is becoming more possible with today's reveal from Dutch gaming site PS Focus. According to their inside source, Bethesda will announce the cancellation next week. I'm not the only one excited. There have been many sites that have had good things to say about, including 4Player Podcast who gave it their Game of the Show award last year. It's a shame to see such a promising title possibly not seeing the light of day. We'll update when Bethesda makes their announcement next week. Here's some gameplay of Prey 2:
